What's Ahead for the Sundays in August
My Musings for Our Time Together with God in Worship

August 3rd
The Celebration of Holy Communion-You Are Invited to the Table

After worship: Congregational Meeting Concerning the Possibility of an Elevator

The Sermon: "What Compassion Can Do"
"And he had compassion on them..."-from Matthew 14: 13-21

What moves you to have compassion? Jesus had been yearning for a time by himself after an extended time of preaching, healing, & teaching. He must have been exhausted and needed a time to regain his strength and perspective. On top of all of that, Herod had now put a price on his head, so "he withdrew from there … to a lonely place apart." But his compassion would not stop. So he healed even more people who sought him out. Risking his life, his mission to love meant more to him than his own survival --- not for money or fame, but for everyone's salvation.

The Sermon: "Who Are The Reubens of Our Day?"
"But when Reuben heard it, he delivered him out of their hands, saying, 'Let us not take his life."
-from Genesis 37:1-4, 12-28

Jealousy. What an emotion, a trait, and a cause of action that could lead to murder. In this story of Genesis, Joseph was the least liked by his brothers who went as far as wanting to put Joseph to death. But there was one brother who did not have that hatred. His name was Reuben. While Reuben's brothers were ready to kill their blood brother Joseph, Reuben stepped in and "delivered him out of their hands." While greed and selfishness climb the ladder in today's society, there are 'Reubens' who embody Christ-like qualities.

The Sermon: "U-Pick - The Sequel"

Last summer we had a Sunday when the folks in the congregation got to pick the topic for the sermon of the day before the worship begins. Slips of paper will be available in each pew and you can pick a scripture, a topic, or a person in the Bible you would like to hear more about. These slips of paper will be gathered and one person will draw from a bowl one slip. Whatever is on that slip will be the sermon topic for that Sunday. Of course, you must sign the slip of paper; otherwise it will be thrown out and be considered ineligible. Here's your chance to pose your sermon topic!
